What We Use For Open Air Preaching

27/10/2020

For years we have used quizzes and prizes to initially gather a crowd and engage them.

Sometimes having a flipchart as an unused backdrop shows passers-by that the speaker isn’t merely on a rant on top of a soapbox, but is doing an interactive presentation—giving people more confidence to pause and listen. Other times, we use each page as an illustrative tool.

In the two downloads below, you’ll find the files
(which the team in the US uses) to print the chart yourself. Two options are included: the multi-page version is more comprehensive and goes through the gospel and common objections; the one-page version quickly shatters the ice and leaves room for more dialogue. (Often when the longer version is used, not all of the pages are utilized. After using it for a while, you’ll find which pages you’re more inclined to use.)

Flipcharts

We in the UK use an A3 sized flipchart like this one, which sits on a tall stand. We find this easy to manage, although the compromise is that it's a little smaller.
Here is a flipchart for custom presentations . We recommend using weights to make sure the chart doesn't fly away in the wind. Alternatively someone can stand there and hold it. Make sure your flipchart is compatible with the size of your prints.

Other useful items we use for open air preaching:

1. A foldable (mobile) stool to elevate yourself. This is to help you stand out and be heard:
<- We use one similar to this (but any sturdy step will do, since the price for the metal ones have inflated since we bought it)
<- Here's a taller one

2. Don't want a flip Chart? Try this trivia book
3. A personal speaker. If you're worried about your voice not being loud enough, you're allowed to have a personal amp in public. As long as it isn't too loud, you're allowed to use this for open air preaching in the UK. â€‹
4. To create a “crowd line,” tie about 3-4 metre rope to pavement chalk to help you draw an arc.

5. If possible, get a large poster display. This will make your "presentation" look more official and therefore grab more attention. Here in the UK we use this poster (below).

6. Voice recorders are good to protect you from any false accusations. Thanks to the long recording times, once set, you're ready to go almost all day. Buying a recorder with a tie mic is usually the best in our opinion as leaving them in a pocket sometimes blocks a lot of the audio or makes rustling noises.
7. When we go out into the streets as a ministry, we have camera men walking around taking footage. Having a team of cameramen isn't always viable financially or practically, but a body Video camera as a protection tool, shouldn't be too expensive. If you ever need it, you'll find it was worth every penny.
